JLM – Oregon Bio Meeting

On occasion of Biomed 2016 and the 6th International Jerusalem Conference on Health Policy, JBNF-Biomed will be organizing a special event with leaders from the Oregon Bio Business community and from the TECNA (Technology Councils of North America). On this occasion,  Jennifer E. Fox, Executive Director of the Oregon Translational Research and Development Institute (OTRADI) and the OTRADI Bioscience Incubator will be presenting the successful initiative of developing bio business in Oregon and the potential of cooperation with the Israeli bio community. Skip Newberry, Chairman, Board of Directors, TECNA and president, Technology Association of Oregon will talk why 22,000 North American technology-related companies are members of TECNA through some   52+ IT and Technology trade organizations and why this is so important for business.  Skip Newberry will also discuss the potential for Israeli companies to interact with their extensive network of member companies. Tsafi Danieli,  BioGiv Director, will present how BioGiv,  the Hebrew University’s  “Excubator” Infrastructure Center shares the vast scientific knowledge and expertise of the Hebrew University with early-stage biotech and biomed companies, providing them both academic and business mentorship, access to top notch facilties and services. a on-campus incubator and a lot more.

Jennifer E. Fox, Ph.D. Executive Director of the Oregon Translational Research and Development Institute (OTRADI) and the OTRADI Bioscience Incubator

Jennifer E. Fox, Ph.D. is the Executive Director of the Oregon Translational Research and Development Institute (OTRADI) and the OTRADI Bioscience Incubator (OBI). OTRADI is a state-funded non-profit institute that advances bioscience commercialization, product development and startup business incubation in Oregon.

Dr. Fox joined OTRADI as one of its founding scientists in 2008, establishing the state’s first high-throughput drug discovery laboratory.  Under her leadership as Executive Director, OTRADI designed, built-out and manages Oregon’s first, and only, bioscience-focused incubator—the OTRADI Bioscience Incubator (OBI). The OBI has been at capacity since opening in mid-2013, with six bioscience client companies. In response to an ever-growing waiting list of bio-startups, the OBI expanded in 2015 to host fourteen startup companies.  OTRADI launched a second location—OTRADI South—of their drug discovery proof-of-concept laboratory in Corvallis, Oregon in March 2015.

As Executive Director of OTRADI and the OBI, Dr. Fox has invaluable business and economic development experience via the management of OTRADI’s assets, including $14 million in grant funding and $3 million in revenue, as well as through her ten years of experience working directly with bioscience entrepreneurs, researchers and companies to develop small business grants and manage early-stage commercialization projects.  Dr. Fox is an active member of Oregon’s growing bio-entrepreneurial community.  She currently serves on: the Oregon Bioscience Association (Oregon Bio) Board of Directors, the Oregon Entrepreneur Network (OEN) Advisory Board, the Portland Community College Bioscience Technology Advisory Board, the Fertilab Thinkubator Board of Directors, the Pacific Northwest Life Science Executive Forum, and is a mentor and sponsor of the Saturday Academy Apprenticeships in Science and Engineering high school internship program.

Dr. Fox is accomplished in the scientific community, having been awarded multiple NIH and NSF grants and has written textbook chapters, review articles, invited commentaries and more than 20 peer-reviewed articles.  She received her Ph.D. in molecular and cellular biology and has more than 20 years of laboratory research experience at such universities as University of Oregon, Northwestern University, Tulane University, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and University of Georgia. 

Skip Newberry –Chairman, Board of Directors, TECNA

 and president, Technology Association of Oregon

Skip is a frequent speaker on technology trends and topics, economic development, public-private partnerships and civic innovation. Before joining the TAO, Skip served as an economic development policy advisor to Portland Mayor Sam Adams, where he helped create Portland’s first comprehensive economic development strategy in 16 years, recognizing software as a key industry cluster. While at the City of Portland, Skip’s projects included the adoption of the nation’s first open source software procurement policy at the municipal level, an award-winning regional open data initiative and the development of resources to support entrepreneurship, like the Portland Seed Fund. Previously, Skip was a corporate and IP attorney and entrepreneur. Skip is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of TECNA, Technology Councils of North America, which is a global network of technology and entrepreneurship associations, and he serves on advisory boards for Wells Fargo and Worksystems, Inc. Skip is also a 2012 recipient of the Portland Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 award. When he’s not working on behalf of the region’s tech industry, Skip enjoys exploring the Pacific Northwest with his family.

Tsafi Danieli, Director, BioGiv, HUstart, Hebrew University, Givat Ram

Tsafi Danieli is the founder and director of “ BioGiv Excubator”, a specialised university-based center for promoting and supporting entrepreneurs and inventors to translate ideas into new products and bring new technologies to market, while using the infrastructure of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Dr Danieli is also the head of the Protein Expression Core Facility at the Wolfson Centre for Applied Structural Biology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. The core facility functions as a biotechnology research center for the development and implementation of novel technologies in recombinant DNA, molecular biology and protein production. It also operates as a training centre supporting individual research projects and conducting workshops and courses for scientists from academic institutes and from the Biomed & Biotech industry.  Dr. Danieli holds a BSc in Biology and MSc in human genetics from Tel Aviv University, and a Ph.D. in molecular virology from the University of California, San Francisco Pharmacology Department, in collaboration with the Biochemistry Department at Tel Aviv University.

A new model for supporting early-stage biotech companies 

The Faculty of Science in the Edmond J. Safra Campus in Jerusalem has launched an “Excubator” infrastructure center, to share the vast scientific knowledge and knowhow of the Hebrew University with early-stage biotech and biomed companies.

BioGiv Excubator offers use of furnished and equipped laboratory space, access to specialized equipment, research service centers and experts, all in an IP-free zone.

The core facility personnel is set to train biotech researchers in operating specialized equipment and implementing research methodologies suited for the company’s requirements. 

The Science Faculty facilities have a long and successful record of service to biotech companies such as Teva, BioLineRx, Protalics, Sigma, Evogene, Compugen and many others. 

However, we believe that the most significant impact can be made with early stage companies, where we can expedite research while minimizing costs.

The BioGiv Excubator is ideal for emerging biotech companies, combining the benefits of access to world renowned scientists, advanced facilities and experts, and an access to highly trained Hebrew University graduates.
