IP Management in Horizon 2020:  at the Proposal Stage”

The EC Horizon 2020 R&D programs have opened many funding opportunities for life science companies and bio professionals. Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme ever with nearly €80 billion of funding available over 7 years (2014 to 2020) – in addition to the private investment that this money will attract. Horizon 2020 is the financial instrument implementing the Innovation Union, a Europe 2020 flagship initiative aimed at securing Europe’s global competitiveness.

The Horizon 2020 societal challenge of ‘health, demographic change and wellbeing’ (SC1) for the years 2014 and 2015 includes 34 topics in the ‘personalising health and care’ focus area call (15 in 2014 only, 17 in 2015 only and 2 which are open in both years) and 16 topics in the ‘co-ordination activities’ call (11 in 2014 and 5 in 2015). 8 other actions designed to support the implementation of the challenge are also included and are not subject to competitive calls for proposals. The total budget available is approximately € 8 bn of funding. In addition there is funding for biotechnology in the separate program for Industrial Leadership.

Jeremy Ben David will relate to the importance of taking care of the following IP-related matters when preparing a proposal:

• Why is it important to consider intellectual property?

• Confidentiality

• Identifying and protecting your own Intellectual Property

• Minding the Rights of Others

• IP Costs are Eligible for Reimbursement

• Trademarks

•  Sharing Jointly Developed IP – with each other and with third parties (licensing)

Sponsored by JMB David Ben David,  Bio-Jerusalem, the JCT – Lev Academic Center, and the Jerusalem Business Networking Forum – Biomed Division

Jeremy Ben David- JMB David Ben David

Jeremy Ben-David has been practicing as a Patent Attorney in Israel since the mid-1980’s soon after making Aliya from the UK. In 1995 he established the firm JMB Davis Ben-David in Har Hotzvim, and has assisted life science companies in the development of patent portfolios in more than 60 countries. In 2013 he established within his firm a direct US patent prosecution practice, complementing the services already provided by his firm for close to 20 years.

The firm maintains close ties with several European patent firms with whose assistance they advance the IP rights of their clients in Europe. Traditionally, these rights have been advanced through the European Patent Office, although significant changes are around the corner with the advent of the Unitary Patent System in the European Union. Through personal meetings with his European counterparts, Jeremy Ben-David ensures that he and his team remain current as to all changes in Europe, and how these changes can be expected to impact the firms’ clients.
